MY STORY

1. WHERE I STARTED

"I started skating at a young age in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and quickly fell in love with the game. My early development was shaped by training with Olympian Steve Jensen, a family friend, and former NHL player Stéphane Veilleux. Both played a key role in instilling a strong work ethic and a lasting passion for improvement."

2. CHALLENGES I'VE FACED

"Balancing high-level hockey with travel, school, and training has taught me discipline. Competing as a younger player against older age groups at Western Canadian showcases, the USHL Waterloo BlackHawks rookie camp, and multiple NAHL combines has pushed me to elevate my speed and compete level. After breaking my arm, I had to work even harder through rehab and focused training to get back on the ice. That experience built both my physical and mental toughness and showed me how much I truly love the game."

3. WHAT DRIVES ME

"I love the challenge of getting better every day. Whether it's extra reps in the gym, running hills, shooting pucks, or breaking down video, I'm driven by growth. I also want to make my family and coaches proud and be a leader on and off the ice. Off the rink, I speak fluent Chinese through a full-time immersion program I've been in since kindergarten, and I'm currently working toward the Congressional Award Gold Medal. These experiences continue to shape my discipline, focus, and drive to succeed."

4. WHERE I'M HEADED

"My goal is to play at the highest level possible, whether that's in the WHL, OHL, NCAA, junior hockey, or even in Europe. I'm focused on becoming a complete player, building my strength, and earning opportunities through hard work and consistent performance. Academically, I aim to continue excelling in the Chinese language, further developing my fluency in speaking, reading, and writing. I hope to apply these skills in real-world settings, through travel, international relations, or future career opportunities where bilingual communication is a valuable asset."

5. GOOD TO KNOW

“I want others to know I’m fully invested, on the ice, in the gym, and by watching video. I focus on the habits that don’t always show up on the stat sheet. When point production dips, I take extra reps, watch video for areas of improvement, and rely on details such as puck support, positioning, and winning battles. Slumps don’t throw me off, they sharpen my focus and hold me accountable to both the details and intangibles.”

Being three to four steps ahead of everyone and being able to see plays develop before they happen is an extremely valuable asset. This skill is something that will help the jumps to the next levels be a lot easier."
— Jake Gushue, Head Coach and General Manager, Dryden GM Ice Dogs Jr A Hockey Club
